Welcome to Roundup Athletic Club

History of RAC

Roundup Athletic Club was built and opened in 1978 by Jim Schroder and Jim Peters. The original facility included 6 racquetball courts, small separate weight rooms, a 20’ X 40’ indoor pool, hot tubs and sauna’s in each locker room, encompassing a total of 18,000 square feet. The first 200 members who joined the club paid a $350 initiation fee, and were called Charter Members. They were, and still are the backbone of RAC. The Charter Members who are still with the club have over 20 years invested with us. You can see a list of the first 200 on the wall in the snack bar area.

In 1983, the club was sold to John Cummins, a local sporting goods dealer. He also was co-owner of Columbia Basin Racquet Club in Richland, Washington. He decided to expand RAC to offer a wider variety of amenities. In 1984, RAC actually doubled in size to 36,000 square feet. A new 25-meter indoor lap pool was added with 2 co-ed hot tubs and a kids wading pool. A 3000 S.F. fitness area was created, as was a new aerobics studio. An indoor jogging track was also added that circled these new additions. The old pool was filled in and a small gym was built for basketball and other activities. The old weight rooms were converted to more locker room space, doubling in size each locker room. The courtyard was covered and converted into a TV lounge and meeting area. During this time, membership grew from around 300 memberships to almost 800, where club growth leveled off for several years.

In 1990, racquetball court #6 was converted into a free weight room. This allowed us to expand the fitness center and add many new pieces of cardio-vascular equipment. In 1993, a second floor was built over the free weight room and another aerobic room was created. This room has hosted many different classes over the years, from dance to yoga to circuit training. Also in 1993, St. Anthony Hospital purchased RAC. The hospital wanted RAC’s mission to continue to be the same, but to also look at ways to improve the overall health of our community. With this in mind, a plan was developed to further integrate the club and hospital services into a unit that will offer a seamless system of not only restoring a person’s health, but to enhance that health into their everyday lives.

RAC’s next expansion was completed in 1996. A new full court basketball gym and walking track was built. St. Anthony’s Outpatient Physical Therapy was also moved into the new facility, and now consists of 2800 S.F. of re-hab space. Amenities include new bathrooms, a fully equipped ADA restroom and shower facility, and a Swim-Ex hydrotherapy pool that can accommodate stroke and re-hab patients. Much of the fitness center and aerobic rooms were enlarged and new equipment was added, as well as several new offices. A new state of the art circuit training area was added, which now includes group cycling.

In 1998, RAC added an outdoor component, batting cages. 3 cages are featured with each cage able to throw either baseball or softball. Speeds vary for all ability levels.
Our last remodel includes adding new hot tubs to each locker room as well as new steam rooms. This gives our members the best choice for relaxation and therapy anywhere in the state of Oregon. Currently, almost 1 out of every 4 residents of Pendleton are members of RAC. This continuing commitment to facility excellence and professional service and programs for our members is why Roundup Athletic Club is the best fitness and recreation value in Oregon.
